The dot-root Proposition

To research, develop and validate responses to the current DNS root server system and to support studies in the evolution and extension of the DNS, the dot-root proposition consists of organizing a multiple clustering of experimental parallel and asynchronous root servers, allowing their total mutual control in real-time.

It is to be a non-profit Global Internet Community project open to every Internet participant from every nation, culture and interest. It is to be jointly managed by its Name Server Managers gathered by root server systems. It is to be advised by the most competent and responsible persons and by the whole interested public.

It is to be used to analyze, develop and counsel such concerns as:

  • comparisons of the operations and procedures of root systems in real life operations
  • cooperative operations and procedures for use of parallel master files having a part in common (ICANN) and individual specialized parts: multilingual, local, regional, cultural, business, etc. TLDs
  • collaboration, administration, generation, security and control of root files
  • safety in a real parallel environment: DNSSEC, complementarily and alternatives
  • resilience of such root systems in the face of aggression, load, diversity
  • tools for direct and mutual control, warnings, statistics, performance evaluation
  • service and behavior of user systems in this context
  • support of other naming semantics and utilization architectures
  • development of a universal logic for URL support: servers, directories and plug-ins
  • specifications of necessary additions (DNS.2) to support these extended functions (DNS+)
  • any innovation which may be permitted by this configuration and the work undertaken
  • to serve as a backup or secondary system for the Internet, for live testing
